Tax season is never fun, but nowadays there’s the added burden of making sure you’re sufficiently protected from identity theft tax scams. The Chicago Tribune published an article detailing just how much identity theft has grown in recent years.
According to the Tribune, “About 2.9 million incidents of tax-related identity theft occurred in 2013, up from nearly 1.8 million in 2012.” That’s a whopping increase of 60% in just a few years! Without a solid identity theft protection program in place, anyone could find themselves a victim on tax-related identity theft. Faculty at the University of Texas Law School were recently hit by a tax scam. As the Tribune notes, “TurboTax, the country’s most popular do-it-yourself tax preparation software, halted processing state tax returns for about 24 hours because of a spike in fraudulent filings.”
