Two of the most popular Medicare Supplement insurance (Medigap) plans are Plan F and Plan G. Let’s explore the similarities and differences between the two plans to help you make a more informed decision between the two.
Medigap Plan F and Plan G
You’ve probably heard that Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement insurance plan. Medigap Plan F covers your basic medical care, 100% of your Medicare Part B coinsurance, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, your Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, 100% of your Medicare Part B excess, and foreign travel emergency costs. You can have virtually no out-of-pocket medical expenses with a Medigap Part F plan.
Medigap Plan G is essentially the exact same coverage as Plan F with one exception: your Medicare Part B deductible is not covered. In 2016, the Medicare Part B annual deductible is $166, so you’ll have to pay this deductible first and then the rest of your out-of-pocket medical expenses will be fully covered.
So which plan should you choose? We posted a more in-depth blog detailing the choice between Medigap Plan F and Plan G, but in short, if your annual premium savings with Plan G are less than $166, we tend to recommend Plan F.
If both Plan F and Plan G are out of your price range, Medigap Plan F has a high deductible plan with much lower monthly premiums.
The first step in figuring out your annual premiums with Medigap Plan F and Plan G is to request a quote. It’s free and no obligation.
